"2000CS" / Registry # 8

Owner : Herb
Year/Model : 1968 2000CS (VIN # : 1109079)

About this restoration : As Herb tells it, he was a young man living in California when his employer, a large U.S. company doing contract work for our Government, ask him to go to Germany and help establish a new telephone system. He thought the assignment would last a few short years but did not return to the states until 17 years later. While in Germany, Herb fell in love with the BMW brand and bought his 2000CS. He drove it for many years all over Europe and upon his return had it shipped to Long Beach, California. After getting settled he shipped to car to the Werk Shop for a complete restoration. When we finished, Herb had an offer to return to Europe and put his beloved 2000CS in storage at his sisters house in Albuquerque, NM.

"E30 M3" / Registry # 2

Owner : Michael
Year/Model : 1988 BMW E30 M3 (VIN # : WBSAK030752195698)

About this restoration : Michaels' car developed a real problem. While getting the car teched for a New Jersey BMW CCA Drivers' School, it was discovered that a water leak at the lower right bottom of the windshield had allowed water to enter the car. The firewall, both floor boards and the cowl area had extreme rust and the car had lost it structural integrity. Michael took the car to several New York/New Jersey body shop and all of them refused to get involved. When the car arrived at our shop, we pulled the engine and stripped out the interior. We then cut out all the rusted areas and made new metal panels. We also repainted the car and delivered her back to New Jersey. Although the car is back on the road again, Michael plans to give this car to his son, who is two years old now.

320i

Owner : Josh
Year/Model : 1980 BMW 320i (VIN # : 7171344)

About this restoration : Josh lives in southern New Hampshire and was the original purchaser of this brand new BMW almost 29 years ago. He was 21 years old when he realized a 2002 was the car for him and not wanting to incur any debt, he began saving in earnest for the car of his dreams. It took him four years to save all the money he would need for a cash purchase and by that time, 1980; BMW had ceased production of the 2002 and Josh bought the 320i you see here. Most 320’s have rusted away long ago but Josh took exceptional care of this east coast kept original and now has over 304,000 miles on his ultimate driving machine. We are doing a partial restoration; removing a few small areas of rust, repainting the original color, rebuilding the engine, suspension, driveline and installing a new headliner and carpet. Josh is hoping to put on another 300,000 plus miles in the next 30 years.

The Rhino / Registry # 11

Owner : Greg
Year/Model : 1968 BMW 1600 (VIN # : 1562177)

About this restoration : I found Rhino, a 1968 BMW 1600, on eBay in the spring of 2004. The listing included quite a comprehensive compilation of photographs, with many close-ups. The car had been side-swiped on the driver’s side and punted slightly in the left rear. Otherwise, the photos revealed that the claimed 33K miles by one Albuquerque, NM, owner until 2003, were quite possibly the real thing. Photos further revealed no rust, fairly shiny paint and a decent looking interior.
I took a chance and bought the car for $2,500. Then I had to figure out what to do with it. I had never met nor spoken with Don Dethlefson but had read articles about Don and his restoration work, and gave him a call. Don was enthusiastic about the prospect of restoring the 1600 and offered to swing by Albuquerque and pick up the car on his way back to Lake Bluff from an event (Oktoberfest?) in California. Don happened to have an empty spot in his trailer.
Don picked up Rhino in early July and called me from Albuquerque. Turns out that Don knew the seller and he reported that the car appeared to be a gem in great original condition, obviously needing body work and paint. I was optimistic.
During the process of restoration I learned that the guys in the shop had given the car a job name, Rhino, and would report their labor on time sheets under “Rhino.” The name just stuck.
Rhino came together very nicely and beautifully. It drives tight and smooth, and is a lot of fun. Rhino lives at our lake house in Door County, WI, and has made appearances in the Egg Harbor Fourth of July parade a couple of times.
